PRAISE is being heaped upon our Newspapers in Education literacy scheme by teachers at a Hyndburn high school.
All students in year seven at Norden High School, Rishton, are using their daily delivery of our newspaper to complete assignments in our Super Story Search workbook, and literacy co-ordinator at the school, Sobia Malik, reports that the scheme is creating "a real energy in the classroom."
"I am incredibly pleased with the response of pupils to this material," said Miss Malik. "They can't wait to get hold of their newspapers to start reading.
"Our literacy lessons target all pupils of every ability, but we are especially keen to involve boys and the Telegraph's scheme certainly does that."
"Students are excited by the idea of having a copy of the newspaper each and it has generated a desire to investigate facts for themselves.
"The bonus of rewards for completing Super Story Search reading targets works extremely well," said Miss Malik. "Children enjoy praise and this has boosted their self esteem and sense of achievement.
"We intend to continue using the additional literacy ideas in the workbook after our three weeks of newspaper delivery and would love to repeat the project next year."
The Super Story Search material can be ordered at low cost by any school in East Lancashire. For details please contact NIE co-ordinator, Rita Shaw, tel 01254 678678, ex 255, or fax 01254 680429.
