MEMBERS of the North Lancashire Clarion Cycling Club met last week at an annual general meeting to select a new secretary to replace Harry Aspden of Langho who has held the position since 1936!
Harry is well known throughout Lancashire and England as a record-breaking time triallist, a redoubtable long-distance tourist and as a writer on cycling matters, and he celebrates his 88th birthday next month, feels that he must now pass on his duties to a new generation. As a gesture of thanks for his long service, Harry was presented with a framed print of one of his heroes the famous Italian Fausto Coppi who dominated world cycling before and after the 1939-45 war.
The meeting was by no means a formal event, with members reminiscing about exploits past and records still to be broken. The Lancashire club is one of many sections throughout the country affiliated to the long-established Clarion Cycling Club and members ride in time trials and more recently on the Manchester Velodrome.
Newly-elected secretary is Stuart Kenyon of Accrington.
