MRS W Gregory (Letters, May 4) indicated that staff employed by the Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Health Care NHS Trust are charged £3 a day for parking.
This is simply not true. Staff are actually charged 30p per day, or less, if charges are deducted direct from their salary.
Regarding the principle of charging for car parking on the hospital sites, this was only introduced to fund improvements in car park security and all of the income which is received is fed back directly into security staffing or physical measures such as improved lighting, fencing and closed-circuit TV.
Prior to the introduction of 'pay and display,' discussions took place with both staff side organisations within the Trust and the Community Health Council and it was only following these that the final decision was made to introduce car parking charges.
I am pleased to say that the introduction of 24-hour car park security staffing has achieved our aim of significantly reducing the amount of car crime on the hospital sites.
J L THOMAS, Chief Executive, Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Health Care NHS Trust.
