WELL, at least it was a start for the lads (and lass) from the West End - despite a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Bare Rangers.
This team from the West End has been formed by community minded people of the West End working to help the young people of the area.
It's just one idea being put into action by the newly formed West End Young Persons' Issues Group which is made up of a number of organisations.
Community Bobby at the West End, PC Carl Wood explained why the police supported the team: "Most of the youngsters at the West End are good kids and it's just nice to give them something positive to do.
That said if it gives just one lad or lass an interest and something to keep them out of trouble that would be marvellous."
In their first ever game they played with plenty of spirit and their potential was there for all to see.
But, as yet, the boys from Bare were just too strong for them.
Bare went into a quick 2-0 lead before Liam Dougherty scored. Disaster struck when Wanderers' keeper, John Morrison, was injured just before half time and had to be taken off. Rangers scored two quick goals in the few minutes before the break after Morrison went off.
Already over as a contest Bare showed their superiority by scoring three more in the second half.
But it was a good day out and still the West End Boys were eager for another match. Training is on Thursdays, 5pm to 6pm, at Heysham High School.
