ST HELENS CC secured the point they neeeded to progress to the quarter-finals of the Penketh Trophy by virtue of an abandoned game against Wallasey.
The game was abandoned with St Helens on 143-7 with three overs of the innings left. Roger Burrows (21) Ian Mackus (21) Bappa Mukherjee (30 not out) and Neil Woods (10 not out) all performed well in difficult conditions.
In another rain-affected game the second team won at Wallasey on the faster scoring rate rule.
Wallasey scored 186-7 with Barry Jordan (3-38) Bobby Kenny (2-21) Mike Kenny (1-45) and Daniel Massey celebrating his coming of age with 1-29.
St Helens scored 104-1 off 17 overs with Craig Harrobin undefeated on 60, Dave Lowe 25 and Barry Jordan 15 not out.
The Third Team slumped to 76 all out chasing 166-9. Captain Brian Holmes led the way with 3-47, Ste Fell 1-29 and Paul and Luke Booth 1-11 and 1-54 respectively. Despite the usual good start from Kane Boardman (24) and Phil Dennett (16) the rest of the batsmen gave their wickets away far too easily.
This Saturday the first team entertain Newton-le-Willows at Windleshaw Road in the first league fixture of the season.
