MORE than 200 golfers, aged 50 and over, proved they could still swing a club with the best of them when they competed in a charity tournament at Morecambe Golf Club. The event raised between £1,600 and £1,700 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which this year is celebrating its 175th anniversary.
The event was organised by Morecambe club member Dr Sandy Kilpatrick, treasurer of the Morecambe and Heysham Financial branch of the RNLI. A total of 234 players competed for a number of prizes in the four ball better ball match. Local businesses donated prizes and sponsored holes.
Group winners were Jim Wood and Eric Mills, of Morecambe, with 42 points; and J H Law and J M Young, of Warrington, with 41 points. Alan Fisher won the prize for hitting the ball closest to the pin on the 175-yard 12th- he got it to within 17.5 inches of the hole. Dr Kilpatrick was helped by his wife, Jean, who organised the raffle, Frank Coope, who dealt with the entries and Stan Wallace, who acted as starter.
