GYM staff have helped a Pendle woman prepare for a mammoth 45-mile charity walk, by devising specialist exercises to build her up for the challenge.
Elaine Eccles, 54, of Beacon Close, Colne, aims to raise as much money as possible for Hospice Care for Burnley and Pendle by completing the Rossendale Way route in a day on July 10. Elaine, whose father died of cancer, said she chose the hospice because of the wonderful work its staff does.
"I set myself a personal challenge and then thought I may as well use it to benefit a charity at the same time," explained Elaine, who works in the personnel department at Craven College, Skipton. "I think hospices are wonderful for the work they do."
Elaine is planning to set off at about 5am on the day and complete the circular route 13 hours later. She is a member of the Ramblers' Association and has completed the Three Peaks walk in a day, but has never tackled such a large distance in one go before.
"I'm a member of the gym at the leisure centre in Colne and staff there have given me special exercises to build myself up," said Elaine.
Kaye Bartle, fund-raising assistant at Pendleside Hospice, Reedley, said: "I have a great deal of admiration for Elaine. To tackle 45 miles in just one day is a task that doesn't bear thinking about but Elaine is very determined and I have every confidence in her completing the walk."
Anyone interested in sponsoring Elaine, or who would like to join her, can contact the hospice on 01282 440100.
