ANIMAL rescuers are hoping someone can identify a man who tried to drown a puppy in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Burnley.
The man was spotted carrying the dog on the canal bank near to the Mitre Pub, off Trafalgar Street, by a couple who were walking their own dog. He was in his late teens to early 20s.
When they walked back, they heard the puppy screaming and thought it had been hurt.
Joan Taylor, chairman of Burnley Dog Rescue, said: "They found the puppy in the canal and the sides were very steep. If they had not returned the puppy would have drowned because there was no way she could have got out on her own.
"The man rescued the dog and put her in his jumper. She was crying and howling. I collected the dog from the couple who were very distressed at what they had seen. "I am appealing for anyone who knows who this man is to come forward so we can inform the relevant authorities. If he did not want the dog why did he not leave her where she could be found and a new home could be arranged? If the couple had not walked back she would have drowned."
The cross breed dog is about five months old, sandy coloured with black markings on her face and tail, she has quite large pointed ears.
Joan said she has been very clingy since she was rescued, whimpers a lot and is quite distressed.
A new home is now being sought for the puppy. If anyone can identify the man or wants to offer a home they can contact Joan on 01282 455652.
