CHARITIES are being urged to join in an end-of-millennium extravaganza at this year's Famous Accrington Carnival.

Organisers Accrington Lions are calling on more local people and groups to get involved in the big biennial event which takes place on Saturday, June 19.

To date, only 11 charities have booked stalls on the carnival field at Accrington and Rossendale College.

The procession has also provoked a disappointing response, with only 17 acts booked for the town centre parade.

The Lancashire Evening Telegraph is a sponsor of the carnival, which is being run for the sixth time by Accrington Lions.

But the Lions are desperate to attract more support and say they will have to review their involvement if the situation does not improve.

Spokesman Tony Clarkson said: "As it stands, the people of Hyndburn don't seem too interested in the last carnival of the millennium.

"We are concerned that all our efforts are not going to prove fruitful. We usually have three times as many people in the procession and stalls on the field."

The big day will feature a fun-filled field of excitement at Accrington and Rossendale College, Sandy Lane, Accrington.

Events will include fairground rides, stalls, a shooting gallery and paintball range - and a 200ft bungee-jumpers' crane.

Organisers have roped in a professional bungee team to raise funds.

At least 60 people will be allowed to take part if they raise sponsorship of £45 or more. The Lions want people to sign up as soon as possible. Call Graeme Drummond on 01254 390898.

If you want to take up a place in the procession, contact David Walkden on 01254 236430.

And to set up a stall or attraction on the carnival field, call Albert Jackson on 01254 391811.
