REGARDING the controversy in Great Harwood over their proposed new store, Safeway would undoubtedly breathe new life into a town already sinking into a quagmire of decline, with its plans including a new library, children's play area, all-weather sports pitch, landscaping, etc.
Would Hyndburn Council divert cash that would otherwise be earmarked for Accrington to do this? I doubt it.
Since when has money been invested in Great Harwood on this scale before?
The relationship between the town and Safeway would not end there either. Safeway would continue to play a vital role in our community, involving local schools, and helping to keep local businesses on the map for the common good. Safeway will be a strong link in the community chain.
This might be the last chance the town has to pull in an investment of this proportion. We cannot afford to let it slip through our grasp - it is our lifeline. Our town is crying out for nourishment and an injection of vitality, so this proposal remains an investment, a sign of confidence that Great Harwood can rise from the ashes, a proposal that would, hopefully, act as a magnet for both shoppers and further developments
The alternative is more and more empty shops.
Turn Safeway down and the 'Last Post' will echo around this once proud town. Great Harwood will be dead and buried.
Here is our chance to turn Great Harwood into 'Greater' Harwood. It is time for the arguing to stop and time for a little common sense.
