MOTORISTS from Lancashire are to be told in no uncertain terms that they will pay the penalty if they are caught speeding on the M6.

Lancashire police have caught more than 1,000 drivers breaking 50mph temporary speed limits on sections of the M6 where there have been roadworks in recent months.

And now they plan to erect signs at the side of the motorway telling drivers how many motorists have been caught, in the hope that the figures will act as a warning and a stark deterrent.

Chief Inspector Ian Bell of Lancashire police said: "We are committed to reducing road casualties and clearly the installation of this sign will discourage motorists from exceeding the speed limit."

Highways Agency Project Manager Roy Wood added: "We take great care to plan the works as safely as possible.

"Mandatory 50mph limits are imposed to reflect the restricted width and proximity of roadworks for the safety of all road users.

"We are very concerned that such a large number of motorists have been caught by the speed cameras exceeding the temporary speed limit and these signs will be erected as a further warning to motorists that if they speed they will be caught."

The sign will be regularly updated to show how many motorists have been caught by the speed cameras.

The latest section of roadworks on the M6 is between Junctions 27 and 28 between Standish and Leyland.
