THE new leader of Hyndburn Council is to temporarily step down, just days after taking up the reins of power.
Conservative Peter Britcliffe has been forced to pass on his leadership responsibilities to his deputy, Coun Jim Dickinson, due to ill health.
But Mr Britcliffe, who cited high blood pressure and the recent death of his mother Ethel as the reasons for his decision, hopes to be back in the hot seat by the end of June.
Mr Britcliffe, a special needs co-ordinator at St Mary Magdalen's primary school, Accrington, has passed on his duties
But he has vowed to be back at his council desk after he returns to his school role.
Coun Britcliffe will also continue to vote in committee, which means his decision does not affect the balance of power on Hyndburn Council.
