PRIMARY school children from the borough will be taking part in Walk To School Week next week as part of the campaign to highlight safety issues.
The campaign highlights the benefits of reducing congestion and pollution around schools.
As part of the national campaign St Helens Council is encouraging children to walk to school accompanied by a known adult, who can encourage safer walking and road crossing.
Planned events include:
At Merton Bank County Primary School - all children will be encouraged to walk to school with an adult on Friday, May 28. The head teacher will set an example by walking 15 miles from home to school.
At the Star Children's Centre in College Street children will be sponsored to walk around the school grounds and money raised will pay for miniature road safety signs and traffic lights for outdoor play and education. At Parish CE School in Charles Street health and road safety issues will be discussed in assemblies and lessons. Many of the children already walk to school, but those who don't will be encouraged to so during the week and in the future.
At St Austin's RC School, Marshalls Cross all children will receive a letter from the chair of governors supporting and encouraging pupils to walk to school and children will also be taking part in special walks to support the week.
At Corpus Christi RC School, Rainford pupils will receive pedestrian training at the school.
Further details are available from Lisa Scott, the council's Senior Road Safety Officer on St Helens 456077.
