Clarets target Dean West is expected to make the move to Turf Moor - by his manager at Bury.

West is out of contract at Gigg Lane and although he has been offered new terms he has not signed a new deal.

And Bury boss Neil Warnock believes that West is on the way to Burnley.

"Dean West has told me of his wish to join Burnley,"said Warnock.

"He says he believes that they are a bigger and more ambitious club than Bury.

"And he believes that he has a better chance of being successful."

Warnock says that the defender West will be offered more money at Burnley.

"He will be offered a far bigger contract than anything Bury can afford to offer him if Lenny Johnrose is anything to go by.

"We are disappointed to lose Dean because he has been with the club for a few years but with Bosman there is not a lot we can do.

"It may give our local rivals a big advantage but money does not give you everything. You only have to look at Blackburn for proof."

Clarets boss Stan Ternent is clearly a West fan. He signed him from Lincoln City in the 1995-96 season and West did not miss a game as Bury won back-to-back promotions.

Last season the right back 26-year-old returned from injury but had to settle for a midfield berth.

If West does turn Bury down he would be available on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling. The Clarets other Gigg Lane target Nicky Daws has until the end of the week to respond to the offer of an improved deal.

Daws still has two years to run on his present contract but his new offer - which includes the club captaincy - would make his the highest paid player on Warnock's staff.

Even so Daws is believed to be considering his future following the Bury's relegation from Division One at the end of last season.

It is well known that he enjoyed playing alongside Lenny Johnrose, who made the move to Turf Moor last term, and the pair remain friends off the field.

Clearly if Daws is unhappy Bury will probably decide to let him go - but only at a price.

They midfield man is rated at £500,000.

Turf Moor boss Ternent stuck to his usual line today when quizzed about any possible targets.

"That is speculation and I won't comment on speculation."

He said that there had been no moves over the weekend and he had had no approaches.

But Ternent has not been shy about approaching the club he left last summer for the men who helped guide them to two promotions.

He has already taken Lenny Johnrose, Gordon Armstrong, Ronnie Jepson and Peter Swan to Turf Moor from Bury and don't bet against West and Daws being at Turf Moor in time for the big kick-off.

Gillingham have sold their complete allocation of 35,000 tickets for next Sunday's Second Division play-off final against Manchester City at Wembley.
