EIGHTY-FOUR year old John Tindall was taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire at his sheltered accommodation home in Woodbine Gardens, Burnley.

The fire was caused when Mr Tindall left a plastic tray on a cooker hob which had been accidentally left on a low light. When he went back the kitchen was full of thick smoke.

Station officer Steve Cope said the heat was not enough to set off the heat detectors and that closed doors had prevented the smoke from reaching a smoke detector in the hall.

Mr Tindall was given oxygen at the scene and released after treatment at Burnley General Hospital.
