VANDALS damaged a school's garden, just hours after the last shrubs had been planted.
They threw the shrubs and trees on to the roof of Holy Saviour RC Primary School, Nelson, and tossed soil across the playground.
Youngsters arriving at the school the next day were heartbroken. They joined in to help caretaker Michael Bridges put things right.
Deputy head Ann Marie Burkett, said: "We'd put some large planting boxes on the lawn to enhance the area and create a place for the children to enjoy and we'd just done the last planting on Monday afternoon.
"The vandals came that evening and just threw things about. Fortunately, they didn't damage the planting boxes.
"The children were shocked when they came in the next day and saw what had been done. It's very disappointing. It's just some mindless local yobbos with nothing better to do.
"The children are aware of what's going on and I think they will be keeping an eye open from now on."
Further work is planned on the area to create seating for the pupils.
