PRESTON disability group PUKAR has finally been housed in new premises after a fight for survival.

Appeals in the Citizen led to the ethnic minority disability group raising enough funds for a three-month stay in a town centre council-owned property which is ideal for the group's members.

Group leader Poppy Tanna, pictured with Manjula Modessa said: "We are all happy now that we're in Oakam Court and it is much easier for our members in wheelchairs to get in and out. But it is quite cold and we need a carpet to help get the place warmed up - we're still begging really!

"We are in here for three months to start with and we also need funds for more rent.

"The council will decide on June 10 whether or not we can stay here and if we qualify for any rent reduction."

The Pukar group is a learning centre for disabled people from ethnic minority backgrounds and aims to help them learn basic English, maths and IT skills.
