ROAD safety could soon form part of the National Curriculum in Lancashire's schools after a pilot scheme aimed at teenagers in Leyland was hailed a resounding success.
Runshaw College, on Langdale Road, has incorporated road safety into its curriculum in response to a joint approach by Lancashire Police and Lancashire County Council.
Now the college is set to share its experiences with others by holding a one-day seminar at Lancashire Constabulary Headquarters today (Thursday).
Road safety administrator Cheryl Hill said: "We recognised that 16 to 19-year-olds were accounting for almost 20 per cent of the force's casualty statistics.
"We wanted to come up with a way of getting road safety messages across to these young people in a positive and educational way."
"Runshaw College was very receptive and the initiative has been running since February.
"Much of the work has seen students researching the subject and educating themselves about the causes and consequences of road crashes."
The seminar will hear presentations from the police, Lancashire County Council, teachers and students.
Anne Edwards, curriculum co-ordinator at Runshaw College said: "When the police approached us to pilot this initiative we were delighted to be involved.
"All our students are road users and many of an age where they are just learning to drive and ride motorcycles.
"We thought it would be of benefit to them to learn as much as possible about road safety and the many hazards they face."
The pilot scheme was set up in partnership with Lancashire County Council and is being promoted as part of the "Together We Can Make a Difference" road safety campaign.
