AS a Year 11 student at Woodhey High School, I must say how disgusted I am with the attitude of those individuals calling for the school governors to resign (Bury Times, May 21).

The governors and teachers at this school - of which I am extremely proud to be a part - work tirelessly and selflessly to provide the impeccably high standard of education that has kept Woodhey at the top of our borough's GCSE results tables for many years. And they do it with little recognition or thanks.

Unfortunately, now that it is possible that Woodhey will start the new school term with both an acting head and deputy, the governors are being called upon to resign. This response strikes me as immensely stupid and very thoughtless. At a time when sound leadership is called for, why would "Concerned Parents" (Your Letters, May 21) wish to see the school with a relatively inexperienced - if very capable - head and deputy head team as well as an equally inexperienced governing body, who would be lacking the expertise to successfully steer our superb school through a difficult period.

The current governors do have the experience needed to find the most suitable head teacher and deputy to carry on the excellent work of Mr Bennett and Mrs Dunning. All Woodhey's pupils are very proud of the school and its staff, who educate us to the highest standard. None of this will change because Mr Bennett and Mrs Dunning will no longer be in charge. Their hard work will simply be continued by their successors.

Everyone involved with Woodhey is proud of the good name it has and the reputation it has earned. Woodhey has done a lot for this community, like the Easter harvest when food stuffs were collected for the needy or elderly. Schemes like this do not come from nothing, they have to be thought up and planned, mainly by the governing body and the school PTA.

This sort of spirit will not fade away, neither will this school which so very many appreciate and are immensely proud of.
