A STRIKE threat by Lancashire firefighters has been averted for the time being after firefighters opted for conciliation talks with ACAS.
Firefighters are angry at plans to introduce new working conditions which could be adopted by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service as well as other brigades nationwide.
Changes to sick leave, overtime and the axing of free prescriptions have all met with the wrath of the Fire Brigades' Union, which has been threatening strike action for some time.
The union is also angry at a local flexibility clause, which would give each fire authority the power to change working conditions to suit themselves.
It believes that the changes, if implemented, would alter shift systems, result in lower pay and cut cover at quiet times - potentially putting lives on the line. Firefighters believe fire bosses should stop "meddling" and have opted to agree with other union groups around the country to back plans to meet national fire bosses.
A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesman said they were keeping an eye on developments and added: "We want to wait and see what happens to gauge a reaction."
