PARENTS struggling to push prams over steep kerbs have had their prayers answered - thanks to a 12-week-old baby!
When South Ribble council leader Gina Lewis decided to go for a pleasant stroll around Leyland with her baby granddaughter Rebecca, she soon discovered the problems parents were encountered when they tried to cross the road.
So, to establish just how bad the problem was - and discover how many dropped kerbs there were in the area - Coun Lewis and Rebecca embarked on a long tour of Leyland.
And while the trip gave Coun Lewis the chance to show her new granddaughter Leyland landmarks for the first time, it also allowed her to see which roads needed to have new kerbs fitted to make life easier for parents.
After the tour - taking in Church Road, Towngate, Hough Lane, Turpin Green and Canberra Road - not only was Coun Lewis slightly jaded, she was also determined to sort the problem out.
She said: "It had been 27 years since I had pushed a pram around town and it has become a nightmare.
"There is a great need for new dropped kerbs."
Dropped kerbs have now been installed at strategic locations in Canberra Road, in addition to sites in Moss Side.
Coun Lewis added: "Hopefully, more can be installed in time to help solve the problem.
"I think it is safe to say many people owe a debt of gratitude to my granddaughter!"
