THE St Helens Combination brought the curtain down on the season with the Sunday Division's Hatton Travel Cup Final at Ruskin Leisure
The clubs contesting it were Premier Division champions Ex Services (Rainhill) and runners-up Oddfellows.
The two sides, hotly encouraged by their supporters, who provided the Ruskin Drive ground with its biggest crowd for a long while, started off at a brisk pace which lasted the whole 90 minutes.
Colin Jess opened the scoring for Ex-Services and they increased this through Jimmy Sinnott, before the interval although Oddfellows, always in the game had missed several chances. Oddfellows, after the break, at least saw their efforts rewarded when John Grady reduced the arrears and soon after John Lee rattled in the leveller. Then, Ex Services, who had seemed to have gone off the boil, at last woke up and Ken Woods put their noses in front and with 10 minutes remaining, Jimmy Sinnott made it 4-2 for the Rainhill outfit.
Oddfellows, however, were not finished yet, and in the last few minutes a Steve Hockenhull goal gave them hope, but time, ran out and so allowing Ex Services to record the double with a 4-3 victory.
John Pennington, Sunday Administrator and League Vice Chairman presented the trophy and medals.
