ST HELENS CC strolled to victory against Maghull on Saturday.

Any hope of Maghull extracting revenge for their previous defeat in the Penketh Trophy disappeared in a good early spell of fast bowling from Steve Jordan (2-17) and Gary Sheppard (2-17) which left the visitors reeling on 25-5.

Spinners Phil Roughley (2-4) Adam Friar (2-7) and Bappa Mukharjee (1-10) brought the innings to an early finish at 66 all out. Neil Woods had a superb game behind the stumps with three catches and a sharp run out after excellent fielding by Ian Mackus.

St Helens lost Phil Roughley (13) early in the innings but Roger Burrows (18 not out) and Ian Mackus (31 not out) made sure of an early finish and a welcome win.

The under 18 side had mixed fortunes during the week taking on St Helens Recs at Windleshaw Road and losing thanks mainly to a hat-trick by Galbraith.

Recs batsmen compiled 88-3 in their 20 overs. Mike Sheeran top scoring with 33 and Bobby Kenny and Gary Pearson each taking 1-13.

In reply St Helens were all out for 60 with only Bobby Kenny (20) reaching double figures.

Against Warrington St Helens reached 85-5 with Phil Dennett (40), Paul Booth (14) and Phil Mitchell (14 not out) the main run scorers.

In reply Warrington reached 75-7 with Bobby Kenny (2-17), Barry Jordan (2-16), Dave Challinor (2-24) and Gary Pearson (1-12) all bowling well.

This Saturday the second team will be at home to Maghull while the third team will make the short journey to St Helens Recs.

On Bank Holiday Monday Fleetwood Hesketh will visit Windleshaw Road for the first time.
