LAZING on the beach with a good book could have a whole new meaning in Blackpool this summer.

For a common sight will be a mobile library searching the sands for prospective readers.

During six weeks, from July 17 to August 28, the beach barrow will operate between North and South Piers encouraging holidaymakers to dip into a novel for the National Year of reading.

Those taking up the offer to borrow a book will not need to join first, nor will they be issued with borrower tickets. They simply return it to the barrow or a collection point at central Pier between 12.30 and 2.30pm each day.

Said David Owen, chairman of Blackpool's libraries and arts committee: "Naturally there will be books which we do not get back, but if it mean's people are introduced to reading for pleasure it will be worth it.

"The National Year of Reading is all about changing the culture of reading in the UK so it becomes the norm not the exception."

Books for the beach library will be separate from the town's main library stock and will be a mixture of new and second-hand titles from the general public, local book fairs or from publishers.

The scheme is the only service of its kind in the country.

Organisers are currently looking for a couple of students to operate the barrow. Details are available from the administrative officer on (01253) 478107 and the closing date for applications is June 4.
