A MOTHER claims a child could be killed because of parents parking close to a school.
Diana Matthews, of Hunters Drive, Burnley, raised a petition in January calling for Burnley Council to make Wellfield Drive safer for children crossing to Wellfield School and St Mary Magdelene's.
She says even though some work has been carried out, the danger still remains.
Mrs Matthews said: "They have put some road markings on the Pendle Way side but the majority of the children live on the Wellfield Drive side and there is still a problem with parking on Wellfield Drive.
"There are no road markings on Wellfield Drive when you come out of the school and there has even been a problem with parents parking in the driveway of the school.
"Is a child going to have to be killed before they will take action? I understand the traffic wardens were out in the area videoing the situation and still nothing has been done.
"Children are being forced to try to cross the road by walking between parked cars and I have had to call the police out because of the dangerous situation."
But senior engineer at Burnley Council Gordon Leighton said the council had taken action and was also planning to extend the zig zag lines on Wellfield Drive which would mean there was a larger area for children to cross where parents should not park their cars at school times.
He said: "This issue has not been forgotten. The difficulty is it is the start of a new financial year and the contractor who carried out some of the works is not on the approved county list so we have had to ask if they can be allowed to complete the lines. We are waiting for a reply and then the work will be carried out."
Burnley Council had asked County Hall if an alternative access road could be made from Pendle Way, but it would remove too much recreation area from the school.
