POLICE cordoned off a remote moorland spot today after a badly burned body was discovered in a blazing car.
Emergency services were called to Well Lane, Brinscall, at 10.30pm yesterday where a Vauxhall Astra was on fire.
A police spokesman said the body was so badly burned it was impossible to tell if it was a man or a woman. He said: "The car was well alight and the body was found after the fire was put out."
Victor Tebbit, of Ashmeadow Lane, Brinscall, watched from his bedroom window as fire engines, police cars and the police helicopter went to the scene.
He said: "There were four police cars and a fire engine and shortly after the police helicopter arrived.
"It struck me as very strange and my wife and I thought someone had been murdered.
"They lit up the whole area with a beam of light and you could see police officers searching the area.
"There was certainly a lot of activity up there and it carried on for a while."
The hilltop scene was cordoned off by police earlier today and a police tent placed over the area where the car and body were found.
Fire crews from Blackburn and Chorley attended and divisional officer Peter Grisedale from fire brigade headquarters in Preston is working alongside police in the investigations.
