RUBEROID Sutton Cricket Club suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Wavertree on Saturday.
After Suttons skipper Andy Brogan lost the toss, Sutton were invited to bat first. Sutton struggled early on a pitch doing more than a bit. SS Das fought his way to 60 but most of the other top order batsmen failed to get to grips with the pitch.
Wicket keeper Stuart Toole then bludgeoned the bowling round the park in a quickfire 39 to leave Sutton 183 all out.
Unfortunately a combination of dropped catches and bad bowling meant Wavertree made batting easy as they reached 184 for 4.
The Second XI had a great win over Wavertree. Bowling first Sutton restricted Wavertree to 172-8 on a pitch that should have yielded 220. Skipper Mark Reynolds led the way with 5-44. Alex Marsh with 52 not out, John Allanson with 50 and Phil Jukes with 31 were Sutton's stars with the bat.
On Sunday Sutton hosted Leigh in a Third XI game. Sutton batted first and made 245 for 5 in their 40 overs. Joe Harvey made a stunning 117 and Darren Hockenhull 58 as they shared a partnership of 185. Sutton then bowled and had Leigh at 185 for 8 at the end with all the bowlers chipping in.
On Monday Suttons First XI were at home to Runcorn. Sutton batted first and made 122 all out including 6 LBW's. Sutton then had Runcorn in all sorts of trouble but Runcorn held on for the draw.
The Second XI travelled to Runcorn and were invited to bat first on a green wicket. Brian Wearden 42 and Luke Tunstall with 36 battled for Sutton and allowed them to reach 155 for 8. Sutton then bowled at Runcorn and Mark Reynolds and Dave Pye with three wickets apiece and Phil Jukes and Dave Laithwaite with two apiece bowled out Runcorn for 85. Another excellent performance allowing Sutton to take 40 points at the weekend.
On Friday Sutton played Liscard in the Liverpool Echo Cup. SS Das 108 and Mike Rimmer 53 billed the Lisguard bowlers for 203 for 5. Sutton then bowled out the opposition for just 9 runs, something of a record.
Sutton wish to thank their weekend match sponsors St Helens Motor Factors and Sutton Timber for their continued support.
