OUTLINE approval has been granted to build new homes at Castlebrook High School.
Part of the grounds to the north of the Unsworth school has been earmarked for development of an unknown number of properties.
The land offers little value in terms of providing pupils with recreational facilities, although many youngsters congregate on the site outside of school hours.
Objectors to the scheme believe the development would result in the loss of more open land and increase traffic congestion.
Members of Bury's planning control sub-committee approved the scheme on Tuesday.
Full details of the project, including the exact number of homes to be built on the land, must now be submitted for final approval before any work can begin on the site.
