THE Asian Women's Centre faced an uncertain future after funding for the project ran out in March. But this week, following the news of their second Lottery windfall, the centre's steering committee have made plans to extend the centre to give help to more Asian women across the borough.
The Asian Women's Centre was established three years ago by Bury REC after they received a Lottery grant of £102,900 - money which ran out this year.
"The second grant could not have come at a better time," said Tasleem Akthar, clerical officer for the centre.
"We desperately needed the money to keep the centre going. More importantly it means we can help even more Asian women." The centre, which this year received charity status, was set up to help Asian women to enter mainstream life, and give advice on a range of issues, from legal advice to form filling.
The second grant, for £190,142, will be used to fund a development worker, an outreach worker and administration staff.
"This means we will be able to go out more in the community to help more women - and keep the centre open longer," said Miss Akthar.
