MR P Webster (Letters, May 25) appears to miss the point concerning the proliferation of sparrowhawks.
It is not a case of reducing their numbers for the sake of it - they are a national menace and notwithstanding the fact that they are responsible for the taking of racing pigeons, there is no doubt that their numbers have had a major impact on the decline of our song birds.
Ninety thousands sparrowhawks each consume three small birds a day, which leaves little to the imagination of the number of birds lost annually.
