NEW legislation which came into force this week allowing councils to create 20 miles per hour speed limits in their own areas without special government approval has been welcomed by Pendle MP Gordon Prentice.

He believes it could cut accidents and save lives in the area.

Until now local authorities who wanted to create 20 mph zones had to get special permission from Whitehall.

There are now more than 300 in existence, cutting pedestrian casualties by 60 per cent and the number of children injured by 67 per cent.

Labour MP Mr Prentice said: "There are lots of residential areas where speeding traffic creates enormous safety problems.

"Local authorities such as my own in Pendle are well placed to decide which neighbourhoods and which streets should be designated as go slow."
