A FORMER Mayor of Hyndburn was today in intensive care after undergoing heart surgery.

Coun Clifford Westell, who represents Spring Hill ward in Accrington, was in Blackburn Royal Infirmary following an operation yesterday afternoon.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed Mr Westell was in intensive care but would not comment on his condition.

His wife Dorothy, also a borough and county councillor, was unavailable for comment.

Council chief executive Mike Chambers said: "Mr Westell's wife did tell me he was due to have an operation in connection with his heart yesterday afternoon.

"All the council staff are sending their best wishes and hoping he'll soon be back with us."

Labour group leader Coun Ken Curtis added: "I knew Cliff had gone in for observation on Tuesday because his wife Dorothy sat in on a policy and resources meeting in his place.

"I was surprised when I learned they were operating. We hope Cliff's soon back in action."
