I READ with interest the article about the old town hall, featured in the Citizen.
There was an entrance in the Fishergate side, used by the government during the war for the issuing of food coupon books, if my memory serves me right.
The entrance overlooking the market square was up some steps and there was a lovely large hall used for concerts such as those by the Cecilian Choir, etc.
It was also used as a ballroom, plus other activities.
I remember my mother telling me how she was herded with others underground, where the basement was used as an air raid shelter.
She had to go down there when the sirens went off one morning while she was in town. She said she would never have gone down there again.
I remember walking down Fishergate the morning after the fire.
