I READ with interest the letters on Preston becoming a city (Citizen Letters June 10 1999), and would say it has already got some ideal makings of one.
How many cities can you drive into without getting lost? Don't all big cities attract beggars? We don't need to make Preston into a city, but into Proud Preston again.
We could start that by introducing a better bus network, with better customer care, and even bringing back the ticket man.
We could build more car parks, and bar beggars and such like from the subways and streets so people would feel safe coming into the town. Also, stall holders should be encouraged to come back to the outdoor market. Parts of Preston are too pretty to become a polluted, beggar -filled, overcrowded mess .
Preston needs to be a safe, clean, easy to get to, beautiful town - and a shoppers paradise!
