TWO Fylde people have found themselves among Lancashire nominees in the search to find the most active over 55 year olds in Britain.

And Peter Duffy, of Lockerbie Avenue, Thornton, and Sheela Hawkins of Cleveleys, have both been entered in the top competition organised by builders McCarthy and Stone by the people closest to them.

Artist and model maker Peter, 69, has been accepted because of his work over the past few years in the Cleveleys Carnival and said being nominated by his wife Jean came as a complete shock to him .

Through showing his matchstick models of famous landmarks, including Blackpool Tower, Peter helped to raise over £400 in last year's carnival.

Peter said: "Jean only told me after she had nominated me, but I was delighted.

"I just hope it all goes all right in the regional finals, but I'm not sure what the judges are looking for."

The area's second representative is 64-year-old Sheelah Hawkins, nominated by her friend Jannis McLellan, 52.

Jannis said: "Sheelah is wonderful, a real lady with a youthfulness that lots of young people don't have.

"She helps out at Trinity Hospice, Blackpool, and fills her days with useful and productive activities.

"If the judges look at what I have written about her I think she stands as good if not a better chance than anyone else."

The pair compete in the regional final on June 29 at Lystra Court, St Annes, with the winner from Lancashire going forward in the grand final in July.
