RENOVATE an attic space and turn it into a counselling and computer room in a single day.

That was the challenge which faced builders merchants' Jewson, who chose Revoe School on Grasmere Road in Blackpool for their Anneka-style Community Challenge.

The project was one of a select few which have taken place around the country, renovating youth centres and schools and providing various services. One scheme, at a school in Glasgow, saw a playground altered for disabled children.

The Revoe project was chosen from hundreds of nominations in the Radio Wave catchment area.

Simon Busk, general manager for Jewson on the Fylde, explained: "It went fairly smoothly - there were no major problems. At first we wondered if we could manage it but by lunchtime we knew it was possible.

"We cheated a bit by going in the day before to clear the space which was full of stuff. Without that we might not have managed! The key was careful planning on paper beforehand and an early start."

The Jewson team, in co-operation with Newfield construction, who provided their services free of charge, started their day at 6am but had the challenge well and truly wrapped up by 4pm.

Simon was also eager to praise the dedicated workers who helped with the project, saying: "There were some good lads who all worked very hard and the kids and staff at the school were great."

The school is delighted with its new facility. Deputy head Barbara Parkinson said: "The area was a waste of space before and we could only use it for storage as it had no ceiling.

"It has been transformed from a dingy, useless attic into a safe, secluded and peaceful retreat where children and staff can chat away from the bustle of the school.

"Some of the children visited the project on the day to inspect how it was going and all the workers were brilliant with them. I still have children coming up to me. eager to go and have a look at the finished room."
