COLNE pair Glyn Shuttleworth and Alan Handford won the Althams Travel Spring Doubles at Ighten Mount last weekend.

The newly-crowned champions had won through several tough qualifying rounds to reach the last four and had to overcome two very good teams to win the title.

In the semi-final the Colne men were behind on the scorecard from the opening end against Rossen- dale players Frank Lord and Ian McNeil.

As the game progressed, Frank and Ian grew in confidence as they led 17-8 and at 20-14, looked set for a place in the final.

However, Glyn and Alan never gave up, and with a succession of scores gradually cut the deficit and produced the winner to steal victory by the narrowest of margins 21-20.

Meanwhile, Preston duo John Hudson and John Ainsworth were enjoying a relatively straightforward game against Failsworth brothers Lee and Darren Lawton.

Although Lee and Darren made a good late run, the Preston pair went through 21-18.

After two excellent semi-finals the final had all the ingredients for an intriguing contest and the game lived up to expectations.

Both teams played well and yet neither held more than two or three points advantage from start to finish.

But when the chips were down at 19-19 Glyn and Alan won the vital points for a well-deserved victory 21-19.
