A SUPERSTORE was today turning over its foyer to local farmers for a special market.

Asda in Colne was hosting the first of a series of monthly farmers' markets. The initiative was the brainchild of Pendle Council and the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and part of an Asda campaign to back farmers.

The scheme, supported by North West Fine Foods and the Adapt Growing Project, will give local farmers and food producers living around Colne the opportunity to sell their fare direct to shoppers.

An NFU spokesman said: "There are 10 stalls this weekend, selling a variety of goods, such as eggs, yoghurt and ice-cream. The markets will give local producers a boost and provide local food for local people." This weekend's market is taking place today between 10am to 5pm and tomorrow from 10am to 4pm. Others will be held at the store on August 21 and 22 and September 25 and 26.
