BOMB disposal officers were called into Rossendale after a World War One hand grenade was handed in to Bacup Police Station.
The grenade was taken in at 4.30pm yesterday by a relative of an elderly person, who said it had been in a house in the Bacup area for several years.
Sergeant Eddie Entwistle, of Bacup, took the grenade to Lee Mill Quarry for bomb disposal officers to examine.
Although the pin was still in the grenade, they found the explosive inside had been removed so there was no need for a controlled explosion.
Sgt Entwistle said: "If anyone does find any such items they should not be moved. As far as possible evacuate the surrounding area and contact the police."
In March, Bacup police station was evacuated after two water workers brought in a three-foot World War Two rocket, dug up on the moors and a controlled explosion was carried out.
