Spokesperson Carol Richardson, said: "Obesity levels in this country are continuing to rise. The levels are 17 per cent for women and 13 per cent for men, numbers which are expected to double by the end of 2000.
"One of the main reasons is the lack of physical activity in people's lives. Technology has taken over.
'If everyone in the country walked for 30 minutes a day we wouldn't have this problem.
'Steps to Health decided to tackle the problem by setting up gentle exercise sessions for those overweight and not used to exercise.
"Everyone will be in the same boat and will be issued with an individual programme."
