A THORNTON pupil battled it out at the recent Lancashire Enterprise Schools' Mathematics Challenge 1999.
But Jennifer McCormack, of Hodgson High in Poulton, saw her quest to become Lancashire's maths champion halted at the Woodlands Centre, Chorley.
Jennifer was faced with mind-bending equations and brain-teasing conundrums in the final which was won by a Penwortham pupil.
A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "There were 20 pupils in the final and every one of them were winners.
"Although Jennifer didn't win she performed extremely well under the circumstances."
