INTREPID Duncan Wood is getting into the saddle and strapping on his backpack in preparation for a 250-mile bike ride across Israel.
The ride, which will take Duncan (41) from Galilee to Jerusalem, will be completed in five days of travel along the River Jordan, taking in the sights of Israel on the way.
Duncan, from Kirkstone Drive, Norbreck, is gearing up for the challenge by training on Monday and Tuesday nights. He also took part in a charity bike ride in Preston last Sunday (June 27).
He's looking for more sponsors to pledge their support and help him to raise £16,000 for Help International.
He told the Citizen: "I have donated £250 myself to cover travel, accommodation and my bike. Now I want to raise sponsorship money which will go to Help International which is a Christian relief and development association.
"The charity provides help and care in poor countries like India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It runs health clinics and supports education in poor communities."
Although he sees cycling mainly as a leisure activity, Duncan is very keen to succeed on his challenge and has until October to train.
He said: "I like the sport but I'm not really a serious cyclist."
Duncan is doing the ride in conjunction with the Blackpool Community Church - based at the Blackpool Community Centre off Bispham Road, Bispham.
He will be joined on the trip by Alan Robinson - also from the church. Anyone who would like to support Duncan can call him on (01253) 854166.
