FYLDE'S answer to Fame will come alive on Friday (July 2) when the curtain falls on the region's performing arts centre.
Blackpool and the Fylde College is closing its Clifton Drive campus in St Annes, and moving staff and students to a purpose-built unit in Palatine Road, Blackpool.
The building dates back to 1906 and the centre is widely praised in the business for the delivery of its courses. Increased interest in the courses offered means the facilities are no longer adequate, hence the move which will be a sad one for many. Not least of these is head of drama Brian Hindle who has been at the site for 30 years.
"I started as an assistant lecturer and there are a lot of good memories," he told the Citizen. "I shall be very sad to leave in many ways, but on the other hand we are getting a wonderful new performing arts centre."
One of the most satisfying things about working at the college, says Mr Hindle, is seeing former pupils doing well. These include Hollywood director Peter Chelsom, West End success Joanna Ryding and David Thewlis who co-starred with Brad Pitt in Seven Years In Tibet.
"A lot more are working in the top end of television and it's great to see them succeed," he said. "A lot of this is down to our aim of giving students a sense of discipline. Most people come here because they are attracted to the performing arts but we make them realise it's a profession which involves skills.
To celebrate the move a special party was due to be held today with a presentation of a painting of the building being handed over to principal Reg Chapman.
There is also a reunion planned for August 29 for all ex-students, regardless of whether or not they have made it in the big time. To register call (01253) 352352 ext 3299.
