PLANS to close Whitefield Ambulance Station this year have been abandoned - but it still faces the axe.
The station, located at Greater Manchester Ambulance Service's (GMAS) HQ on Bury New Road, was to close before the millennium.
It was thought that the ambulance service would operate from Bury while GMAS would move to a centre at Salford Quays.
However, those plans have been shelved and the threat of closure lifted until at least the year 2000.
