ARMY recruits who soldiered through a pioneering 13-week training programme have started out on careers in the armed forces.
The young people from St Helens took part to help them prepare for life in the army. And now, thanks to the course run by St Helens CCTE, St Helens College and the army, 80 per cent of the trainees have secured jobs in the armed forces.
As part of the course, the 16 and 17-year-olds spend five days at an army training camp to help them experience the army's tough criteria. They also learn new skills in subjects such as construction, engineering, catering and business management.
Pat Bacon from St Helens College, commented: "This first programme run at St Helens has been tremendously worthwhile. Sixteen youngsters successfully achieved and are looking forward to the challenge of a career in the armed forces.
