DOG wardens in St Helens are launching dusk and dawn patrols in their latest bid to stamp down on dog fouling and catch strays.
As well as patrolling known problem areas, the council's dog warden team will also target schools and public playing fields. Offenders are liable for fixed penalty fines of £25 for not cleaning up after their dog or more than £40 to reclaim an impounded stray.
Councillor Richard Ward, chairman of Housing and Environmental Services, said: "This council is totally committed to improving the cleanliness of the town and protecting the health of the community. Fouling can pose possible health risks to children and other users of playing fields.
"Many complaints are received regarding dog fouling but if all dog owners would clean up after their dog this potential health hazard would be drastically reduced."
Parks are provided with waste bins and free poop scoops are available usually in parks and from council offices. Advice and further information on dog control issues is available from the council's Dog Warden Service at Wesley House on 01744 456335.
