UNDERLAY manufacturer Duralay is working on new products which can be made from old car tyres -helping to make playgrounds and cowsheds safer!
The Haslingden-based firm currently uses rubber crumb from three million used car tyres a year to produce underlay and now it is researching other products which could be made.
"We've already invested £1million in the recycling process, which has helped make our System Ten underlay one of the most environmentally friendly and popular brands in the country," said sales and marketing director Ian Jeffrey.
First examples of new products include rubber tiles for children's playgrounds, matting for horse stables and boxes and anti-slip tiles for cowsheds.
The potential market is huge with around 37 million tyres being disposed of each year in the UK.
Environmental concerns about many of them going to landfill sites has led to calls for alternatives to make use of recyled tyres.
