NEXT week, 15-year-old British champion Ken Masser will be leaving for a three week tour with the British Orienteering Federation.
On July 17, he flies to Norway for a fortnight training and competing with an under 18 squad. On his return on July 31 he will travel straight to Scotland where he will take part in six days of competition. Ken earned his place on the trip with success in the under 18s selection race.
He started orienteering five years ago when his father Keith introduced him and his brother to the sport. Keith is a keen fell runner with Rossendale Harriers and realised that he could combine his interest with a sport that all the family could enjoy together.
In due course they joined Pendle Forest Orienteers and Ken has made rapid progress. In November, at Cannock Chase, he won the British Schools Championship (year 10).
Although the cost of the Tour is subsidised by the BOF, Ken still needs sponsorship. A contribution from Rossendale Lions has been gratefully accepted. Other potential sponsors can call Ken on 01706 878935.
