THE 1999 10-mile Championship of the North Lancashire Road Club attracted a good entry on the Clitheroe-based course and both the men's and the ladies sections resulted in very close finishes.
There were only three seconds separating first and second positions in the men's event with prolific 10-mile winner on this course Fraser Snape of Read clocking up his fastest time of the season of 22mins 26secs to clinch the title from Keith Turner, who returned 22mins 29secs.
Neil Cooper with 22mins 36secs was only a further seven seconds behind for third position and Brian Hickey clocked 23mins 33secs for fourth place.
In the ladies event the two contenders were both riding their very first competitive cycling events and at the finish the result was again agonisingly close, with Sharon Smith of Wiswell returning a very creditable 20mph plus ride, of 29mins 46ecs to finish just five seconds ahead of the 29min 51secs of Sue Gostling. The top 10 in the men's event were completed by Graham Sheard (24mins 30secs), Bob Jones (25mins 40secs), Mal Gill (25mins 47secs), Steve Adair (25mins 51secs), Steve Clarke (26mins 04secs) and Bill Auld (27mins 31secs).
