MICHAEL Green, on holiday from college in the USA, ran the 10,000m for Blackburn Harriers in the Northern Men's Knockout.

He lapped the entire field, recording a very rapid 31.37, confirming excellent form which has seen him reduce his PB for 5,000m to 14.12 this year. Michael will return to the States in September.

Mark Birchall also won for the Harriers, taking the long jump in 6.55m. Youngster Rob Barton ran the 800m in 2.00 to finish second and there were third places for Phil Hall in the 1500m and Mike Hazlewood in the hammer. Blackburn finished fourth of six teams in the match at Lancaster. The winnes were Blackpool and runners-up Liverpool Pembroke - both in higher leagues than Blackburn - progress to the next round. Rossendale Harriers also took fourth place in their tie at Leeds. Junior Chris White was their only individual winner, taking the 400m in 55.2, but the team also took the 4x400m relay when White, John Pegg, Anthony Gotts and Danny Byrne set a season's best of 3:44.2. Anthony Gotts (200m), Nigel Gotts (10,000m) and Nigel Law (400m hurdles) all took second places to give the team a hope of sneaking second place, but their strength in the running events was not matched in the field.

Pendle men were drawn in the same match as Rossendale, but failed to raise a team. The women however, were involved in a match at Oldham. Laura White, the holder of four Lancashire titles, set a new PB of 5.49 in winning the long jump and also took victory in the high jump. Although they were the club's only win, they took four second places, Laura herself in the 110m hurdles, Ruth Thompson in the 400m hurdles, Victoria Rusius (1500m) and Vicky Haydock (discus). The team finished fifth.
